Real life. Some weeks are harder than others.

I try really hard not to complain about L because generally, he is a pretty easy baby. I’m knocking on wood as I type this, but it’s true. We’ve been so lucky with him.

But you know what? Some weeks, no matter how “perfect” your child is, can be really hard and tiring. Last week there was one day where I showered as fast as possible while listening to him scream in his crib. Yeah, teething + not wanting to nap = rough day all around. In fact, I didn’t write a weekly update post last week because I just couldn’t bring myself to be “chipper” and light.  It happens.

Sometimes I limit L’s “real food” meals because I just don’t feel like cleaning up another colossal mess. Sometimes I sing the ABCs for twenty minutes straight in the car out of necessity. Sometimes the Jumperoo is a lifesaver because I can’t be “on” for an additional thirty minutes. And when all of Sunday morning is spent at the doctor’s office because you clipped your baby’s finger instead of nail and it just won’t stop bleeding, you wonder how many gigantic Toblerone bars are acceptable for consuming.

But that’s life. Ups and downs. Easy days, hard days, harder days. There isn’t any real point to this post except to say that we all have those tough days. Yeah, I mostly talk about the good stuff, because 1) it’s more fun to write and 2) it’s definitely more appealing to read. But don’t let the photos, posts and all the fluff fool you. It’s real life here, too!

LOVE this. I think especially with pinterest and instagram, people only display the good moments and so it ends up feeling like everyone’s life is perfect except yours! NOT TRUE.

Friend…yes! I so hear you. Sometimes, it doesn’t matter how ‘hard’ the baby is…it can still just be a hard day on you. Let me tell you about my night last night:
I was home with P solo last night and by the time Shaun got home, I was super crabby. He asked what Penelope did wrong? And when I thought about it…I said…nothing. She didn’t do anything other than be a toddler – nonstop talking, picky about dinner, didn’t want to get out of the bathtub, it was 30 minutes passed her bedtime and she was fighting her last diaper change. She really didn’t do anything wrong but I had HAD IT. I needed her to go to sleep, needed to lie in a lump on the couch with a fuzzy blanket and eat chocolate chip cookies. And you know what? That’s ok! That’s normal. That’s what makes you a good mom. You’re doing a great job.
Also, just a thought…do you get any alone time during the day? Perhaps some time for you (maybe a day in daycare or something?) would also help to clear your mind!

    • Thanks so much, Rachel! I really appreciate the comment. The alone time thing is something I need to work on. Even though I sometimes feel guilty I think I need to force myself to do that at least once a week!

  • OMG, i’m so with you about cleaning up after eating! I feel so bad because Berkeley keeps trying to grab the spoon and feed himself but I know if I let him, I’ll have to practically give him a bath after. But i’m afraid if i don’t let him, then he’ll stop trying and eventually won’t want to use a spoon himself. When he eats finger foods I try not to give him super messy stuff, haha.
Some days/weeks are definitely tougher than others but you’re doing such a great job…I can tell because of that smile that is plastered on L’s face in every picture I see of him ;) And don’t feel bad, you’re definitely not the first mom to clip their baby’s finger. I’m sure you were much more upset about it than he was!

  • So true! We had a night of the nights on Monday. It was awful and I wanted to cry. Then the next day it was so smiles. I have had my highest of highs and lowest of lows with our little one.

  • awwwwwww you’re doing AWESOME–of course there are gonna be the really crappy and hard moments. I think it sounds like you’re dealing really well with all of it :)

and I mean….Liam is such a cutie. I’m just always excited to see pics of him!!

Hi Lauren! I always enjoy reading our blogs. Being a mom of a year and a half year old I can totally relate to mostly everything you’ve mentioned! We had a very similar situation to the nail cutting one you had. We turned to nail files and never looked back. Your blogs are always a great read, and I love how real they are.
